The NFL as American symbol

 

The Los Angeles Times reported that:

 

 

NFL owners reached a consensus Wednesday on a policy regarding the national anthem, addressing the most controversial and divisive issues in recent memory.

 

Under the new policy, players who do not choose to stand for the anthem before games will have the option of staying in the locker room. But a club will be fined if players or league personnel are on the field and do not stand "and show respect for the flag and the Anthem."

 

"It was unfortunate that on-field protests created a false perception among many that thousands of NFL players were unpatriotic," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a written statement.

The deeper message — about economics

 

Here, I agree with Marxist Professor Richard Wolff. In the United States, the presumption is that your employer owns you. Signing up to be employed, according to our economic system, carries no economically compensable risk whatsoever. This is in marked contrast to the holders of capital, who generally get bailed out, one way or another, when things go sour.

 

If the business that employs you goes under, or you're fired or fined for no good reason, too bad. Hence, the situation that the NFL protesters find themselves in. If they protest, their whole team suffers. Sheep herding sheep. Football Nazism.

 

Dr. Wolff addressed this general topic in his recent discussion of the Theranos fraud and its decidedly unequal implications for shareholders and labor. See that video beginning at 06:30 minutes. I recommend it. Most Americans will not have considered this relatively obvious perspective regarding how capitalism treats labor.

 

Sadly, given our brainwashed mental condition, this latest political suppression by the NFL — which lavishly profits from actively brain-damaging its paid, but well-restrained slaves — will go mostly undisputed.

 

 

The moral? — Laissez faire capitalism — combined with permeating racism — systemically subjugate us

 

Mildly or worse.

 

One way or another.

 

Always and obviously.

 

It's built into our system.
