The American autocracy now cites the Bible to support its oppressions — the Divine Right of Kings and all that

Laugh, cry or scream?

To wit:

Attorney General Jeff Sessions . . . suggest[ed] that God supports the government in separating immigrant parents from their children.

“I would cite you to the Apostle Paul and his clear and wise command in Romans 13, to obey the laws of the government because God has ordained the government for his purposes.

“Orderly and lawful processes are good in themselves. Consistent and fair application of the law is in itself a good and moral thing, and that protects the weak and protects the lawful.”

He appealed to “church friends” later in Thursday’s speech in Fort Wayne, emphasizing that non-citizens who enter the United States illegally are breaking the law.

Presumably, God and US immigration law require that children be emotionally scarred.

The moral? — What happened to the separation of Church and State?

I have trouble with a Constitutionally secular government justifying anything on the basis of religious scripture.

And I have an equal problem with a supposedly secular government (a) religiously interpreting the Bible, so as to (b) command obedience and (c) favor cruelty.

That all these errors constitute business as usual in the United States is abrasively irritating.

The inability to (even marginally) reason, with regard to law and ethics, seems to be one of our most dominant national characteristics.
