Driving Meditation through Early Cold Season Landscapes

A mindful watching

Mindfulness — and primal, survival-oriented self — had me noticing the variety of thoughts and emotions that the landscapes between southern Colorado and Puget Sound, Washington evoked.

Interstate 80 Wyoming’s arid, badland-like topography was accentuated by a shallow covering of snow and low-angled sun, even at noon.  Stark, cold emptiness.  Not an easy place to be unsupported by civilization.

In Idaho, dawn warmed a corresponding aridity, but interspersed with large plots of agricultural irrigation, into pink-gold invitingness.

The following day, in Tacoma, Washington, tall, moss-covered trees dripped wetness.  Late autumn colors and easy living everywhere.  A walk along Puget Sound brought views of snowy Mount Rainier and an otter, rippling through quiet water.

Lots of opportunities to attend and stay.
