I stopped reading Time decades ago — a better example of Establishment moronitude is difficult to find

Take this year’s choice of Person of the Year as Pope Francis, who has utters kindly blather of feel goodisms that will not change the Church’s misogynist course one whit.  Nor will the Pope’s morally reasonable caveats about capitalism change anything.  Because, they too, have no mechanically persuasive clout regarding realities on the ground.

No one really pays attention to any Pope long or deeply enough to change the way the world works.

Compare Edward Snowden’s record in 2013

He’s got the United States government literally in a frenzy of cover up, lies, and self-justification.  The entire civilized world is talking about the practical impact and ethical implications of American spying, surveillance, and drone overkill.

Single-handedly, Mr. Snowden exposed a very dark side to America’s astonishing hypocrisy about freedom and human rights.  He has exposed the authoritarian, police state undercurrent that is literally destroying the America that we thought we knew and could count on.

The Pope’s feeble record, so far, cannot touch the short-run, wheels-turning impact of Mr. Snowden’s revelations.  And annual impact is exactly what the Person of the Year recognition is about.

Why did Time elect the “pussy” route? — Pure cowardice

It would not do to name someone controversial as Person of the Year.  Too much chance of losing dollars and pissing off the people in power.  You know, the people who give you the crap that you stuff your magazine with.  Certainly, not with the approbation and accusations of treason that follow Mr. Snowden.

Better to play it safe and select the (frankly) innocuous Man in White as “our boy.”  The Pope has a good sense for theater.  So, let’s distract ourselves with his entertaining pseudo-kindliness, while American government burns the nation’s liberty foundation down.

The moral? — When Establishment folks run a media outlet, you get Establishment garbage and manipulations thrown back at you

For the most part, the Fourth Estate Truth-finding function is dead in the United States.  A pity.
